After spending most of Saturday on a roof trying to revive an AC unit in New Mexico heat, I wanted exactly three things: a cold drink, a quiet house and something with spaceships in it.
My teenage son suggested The Mandalorian and Grogu, although “suggested” may be the wrong word. He basically told me my Star Wars opinions were outdated and I needed to watch it before talking again.
Fair enough.
I’d already followed Din and Grogu through the show, so seeing them in an actual movie felt pretty damn good. The New Republic sends them after Imperial holdouts, which gives the story a simple western setup: dangerous guys are still out there, and Mando is the man you call when regular law enforcement cant handle it.
The action looks much bigger than it did on TV. Ships feel heavier, blaster fights have more punch and the creature scenes dont look like somebody filmed them behind a warehouse.
Grogu is still funny, but thankfully the movie doesnt use him only as a cute green reaction meme. He’s learning, making decisions and occasionally getting Din out of trouble. Their father-and-son relationship is really the heart of the whole thing.
That part worked for me more than the big battles. When you’ve raised a kid, you know the job slowly changes from protecting them from everything to standing back and hoping you taught them enough.
Some Star Wars fans will complain about the story being too simple. And yeah, the main villain isnt exactly Darth Vader. A few scenes also feel like long episodes stitched together instead of a movie.
Still, I had fun. Not everything needs twelve layers of secret family history.

My rating for The Mandalorian and Grogu: 8 out of 10.
It’s not perfect, but Mando still looks cool, Grogu finally gets more to do, and the whole thing feels like Star Wars without trying too hard to remind you every thirty seconds.
Also my son liked it, so apparently my opinions are allowed again.
