On May 11, 2021, the Port’s Board of Port Commissioners held a virtual hearing on the draft Maritime Clean Air Strategy (MCAS). The draft MCAS is business as usual and won’t improve the air we breathe. Thanks to community pressure - including over 200 petition signatures and 195 public comments - the Board directed Port staff to develop a new draft that sets specific public health goals for clean air, creates an achievable transition plan to zero-emission heavy-duty trucks while supporting economic development. The Board also asked staff to increase community and stakeholder outreach and provide a longer review and comment period. This is a small win, but an important step in the right direction. The fight isn’t over. The opposition will be heating up. We can’t let up our pressure on the Port. We are still collecting signatures for our petition.
