Planning for Environmental Justice
To fully participate in decisions
affecting their neighborhoods, residents must be armed
with information and skills. The TFN Campaign helped
residents of Barrio Logan and Logan Heights identify the
risks of chrome plating shops and chemical warehouses
caused by the mixed-use zoning in these
neighborhoods.
In 1994, at TFN's insistence, the
San Diego City Council decided that these industries had
to be relocated and TFN's polluter relocation program
began to grow. Master
Plating, a metal plating shop in
Barrio Logan, was selected as the first business to be
relocated due to its immediate proximity to homes, its
potential for serious accidents and it puts residents,
workers and the environment at daily risk by its
emissions of hazardous chemicals. TFN partnered with the City of San
Diego and the US EPA in an attempt to relocate Master Plating.
The business was successfully shut down in 2002.
TFN takes action to promote sustainable
redevelopment.
