How best to replace South Bay power plant? In regard to the South Bay power plant, we only have one chance to get it right, and after 46 years of tolerating an ugly, polluting monstrosity, we need to replace it with the cleanest option or combination of options possible. June 30 is fast approaching and inadequate opportunities have been provided for public input. The San Diego Unified Port District needs to extend the deadline and have more public workshops. Chula Vista needs to encourage the use of solar energy. Rooftop solar producing power locally is a far superior option than importing power from elsewhere. THERESA ACERRO Chula Vista I urge the San Diego Unified Port District, LS Power and Chula Vista to delay the deadline for the new power plant. It would be easy to just replace the current plant with a plant that would be air-cooled and perhaps slightly smaller but that's not good enough. We have a real opportunity to do something so much better. Let's take some time to involve the public in the decision- making process. This has been done very successfully in planning for our bayfront. We've managed to come up with plans that meet the needs of the citizens, community and natural environment. I believe we can do so much better with our energy situation if we take some time and draw on the collective wisdom of our community. LYNDA GILGUN Chula Vista |
