Dear Editor, Now is definitely the time for Chula Vistans to be active. The opportunities that are presented by the significant planning and redevelopment of a large areas of the city have spawned a significant expansion of civic activity. Over a dozen community groups signed a consensus letter regarding the bayfront development. The general plan and bayfront development meetings are often packed houses. And it is clear the City Council is listening. Led by Mayor Steve Padilla, there is a new openness and receptiveness to public concerns across the dais that was not present in earlier administrations. In fact, his first official act as mayor was to preside over a public hearing on the bayfront attended by hundreds of residents. Recently, responding to public input, he and Councilwoman Mary Salas supported efforts for comprehensive planning of the bayfront – something requested by the many active community groups. Joined by Council member Patty Davis, they acted to defend the integrity of the master planning process when an attempt by South Bay Boatyard was made to alter its lease in advance of the master plan. The good news is that for those who wish to be involved, there are lots of options. Several groups, including Environmental Health Coalition, South Bay Forum, South Bay Greens, Crossroads II, Friends of the San Diego Wildlife Refuges and the Youth Action Network hold regular meetings in Chula Vista. Please call the Environmental Health Coalition at (619) 235-0281 to get involved. It is an exciting time to be an organizer in Chula Vista, where community activism, grass-roots style, is in full-bloom and effectively creating a more chula Chula Vista.
