Development/Communications Director

Environmental Health Coalition (EHC) is a San Diego/Tijuana non-profit social and environmental justice organization dedicated to the prevention and cleanup of toxic pollution threatening our health, our community and the environment. 

EHC has just completed a ten-year strategic plan and is seeking a dynamic, experienced fund development professional to join its senior management team to help design and implement an ambitious fundraising and branding plan.  The successful applicant will possess a deep commitment to environmental justice and a demonstrated ability to organize multi-year, multi-million dollar development programs.

The Director of Development and Communications is responsible for the strategic direction and overall management of fundraising initiatives, both institutional and individual, including planning, budgeting, monitoring and implementation. In addition, the position oversees all communication efforts. The director is responsible for raising $2.1 million annually and the annual budget is expected to grow to $3 million by 2012.  The director reports to the Executive Director and supervises a staff of two.

Major responsibilities include:

Fund Development

  • On-going management of Fund Development Strategic Plan.  To meet the organization’s funding needs, major growth in individual giving is anticipated.
  • Staffs the Fund Development Advisory Committee of the Board of Directors
  • Manages the development of fundraising activities targeted to individual donors (e.g., special events, appeals, and donor communication)
  • Manages major donor and planned giving programs, including
    • Research and setting priorities for visits
    • Development of a customized approach for each potential donor
    • Planning all donor visits
    • Ensuring follow up and maintenance of all major donors
  • Supervises the Fund Development Associate responsible for writing proposals and reports for institutional funders (including private foundations and government grants)

Communications

  • Develops and manages implementation of Communications Strategic Plan
  • Manages the Communications/Branding development activities, including managing the consultant contract and interfacing with staff
  • Manages relationships with media outlets
  • Develops framing, messaging and content of EHC web site pages, the quarterly newsletter and other publications
  • Responsible for consistent messaging throughout the organization
  • Supervises the Communications Associate

Skills Desired

  • More than six years experience in diverse nonprofit fundraising with a demonstrated track record of success
  • Two or more years of supervisory experience
  • Highly skilled writer
  • Conceptual, strategic thinker
  • Experience with donor data base management
  • Articulate, persuasive speaker
  • Strong work ethic
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish highly desirable
  • Enthusiasm for the work of Environmental Health Coalition and a dedication to environmental justice

Salary Range:            $55,563 to $61,118
