Tours Calafiero are organized by Environmental Health Coalition's Border Environmental Justice Campaign and EHC's Tijuana affiliate, the Colectivo Chilpancingo Pro Justicia Ambiental.
Participants meet at the San Ysidro border crossing on the U.S. side, in front of the McDonald’s by the trolley tracks at the end of the trolley line.
Participants are guided across the border at San Ysidro and board a calafia, one of Tijuana's buses that maquiladora workers typically ride to their jobs in the assembly plants. The calafia crosses Tijuana and tours the Mesa de Otay Industrial Park, including a stop at the infamous Metales y Derivados abandoned maquiladora toxic site. From there, the tour visits the adjacent Colonia Chilpancingo, stopping at the Río Alamar, where workers' settlements line the stream contaminated with biological and industrial waste.
Finally, the tour stops at EHC’s Tijuana office in Colonia Chilpancingo. There, participants share a traditional Mexican meal prepared by colonia residents, discuss issues, ideas and impressions, and have an opportunity to take action.
