U.S. Congressional vote scheduled
for this Thursday, July 20!
Tell Congresswoman Susan Davis:
Vote NO! on the Oman Free Trade Agreement
(OFTA)
OFTA is the same failed trade model as NAFTA and CAFTA – only worse.
- OFTA requires only that Oman enforce its existing labor law, which falls far short of International Labor Organization core standards.
- OFTA allows immigrant worker exploitation. The majority of workers in Oman are from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other Asian countries. These immigrants have no recourse when they are not paid, are asked to work excessive hours, or are deprived of their passports.
- OFTA expands corporate power. OFTA goes beyond NAFTA and CAFTA in granting rights for foreign companies to operate our sensitive infrastructure: electricity grids, port operations and more. OFTA allows foreign investors to sue the U.S. government in secret tribunals for millions of our tax dollars as compensation for "future lost profits."
- OFTA fails to compel Oman to implement key international environmental agreements. For example, the Omani government would not be required to implement the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
- OFTA reduces access to essential medicines. OFTA limits access to essential medicines for victims of national health crises, including HIV/AIDS.
- OFTA is bad foreign policy. It doesn't make sense to advance trade agreements with countries that have no democratic processes and that will enrich a handful of corporations with few benefits to the people of the Middle East or the U.S.
NAFTA, CAFTA, OFTA – Let’s call the whole thing off! The almost one quarter million supporters of Environmental Health Coalition - San Diego Fair Trade Coalition demand trade agreements that defend democracy, workers rights, public health and the environment.
Congresswoman Davis did the right thing when she voted NO on CAFTA. Tell her to vote NO on OFTA.
