Call Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and urge him to
SIGN AB 121!
Dear Friends,
Environmental Health Coalition (EHC) is urging you to take a few minutes TODAY to call Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to urge him to SIGN AB 121.
We need your support ! Governor Schwarzenegger has until October 9th to sign AB 121 and he needs to hear from all of us soon.
With his leadership, he will make a difference in children’s lives by resolving this issue long overdue!
Authored by Assembly Member Juan Vargas, AB121 will:
- Provide CalEPA Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment and the Department of Health Services with authority to establish a health-based standard for lead in candy
- Provide clear authority to the Department of Health Services to test, ban and remove chili and tamarind candies contaminated with lead
- Prohibit the sale of chili and tamarind candies contaminated with lead
- Proactively test chili and tamarind candies before being allowed to be sold
- Require issuance of health advisories when lead has been found in candies to warn parents, health departments and school districts
Background Information:
Lead poisoning is still the number one environmental health threat to children under the age of six. More than 100 brands of candy sold in California, most of them from Mexico, have tested positive for dangerous levels of lead in the past decade. This shameful source of lead poisoning should have been eliminated long ago, but due to massive opposition from US and Mexican candy manufacturers two bills have failed in the last two years. By signing AB 121, the Governor will be putting children first.
We now have an opportunity to pass a bill that will protect children from lead in candy. Please support this important bill by calling Governor Schwarzenegger. Our children should not be eating poisons!!
Sincerely,
Diane Takvorian, Executive Director, EHC
Leticia Ayala, Campaign Director, Campaign to Eliminate Childhood Lead Poisoning
TAKE
ACTION NOW!
Call Governor Schwarzenegger, today and let him know that you are calling to urge him to sign AB 121, the Protect Children from Lead in Candy bill. We have taken lead out of gasoline and paint yet allowed lead to be present in candy eaten by our young children. Now is the time to get the lead out of candy
Let him know that you are counting on his support to protect children’s health!
